How to Build Your Custom Computer Online
Many computer manufacturers, such as Dell and HP, offer you the option of designing your own computer. This feature is useful if you are in the market for a new computer and can't find one that fits your needs in retail stores. By purchasing a custom computer you avoid paying for unwanted components, as you are in control of what is put into the system.

1
Open your Web browser and navigate to the official website of the computer manufacturer that you wish to purchase from. Click on the "Home" tab, which is usually located at the top of the page, to indicate that you intend on buying a personal computer and not multiple computers for a business.
-
2
Choose the model of computer that you wish to customize further. For instance, Dell offers three base models of PCs. The most basic model offered is the Inspiron. This model is intended for individuals with very basic computing needs (i.e., Internet browsing), as it does not have a large hard drive. The Dell Studio is tailored towards those who do a great deal of multimedia editing, thus these models have an above-average amount of RAM. The third and most expensive line is Alienware. All Alienware computers have high end video cards, which make PC games appear more fluid and crisp. Choose the model that fits your needs and select the "Personalize" or "Build Your Own" option.

Select the various components you want in your computer. Consider buying a large capacity hard drive of at least 500 GB (gigabytes) if you plan on storing a great deal of media files, such as videos and music.
-
4
Purchase a minimum of four GB of RAM (Random Access Memory) to be installed inside your computer. RAM is the memory that your computer uses when it runs applications. The more RAM your computer has, the more programs you will be able to run simultaneously. Those who plan on using CPU intensive programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, should be in the market for six to eight GB of RAM to get the most out of their software.
-
5
Consider adding a Wireless-N Internet card to your system's configuration if you transfer files wirelessly, as Wireless-N provides the fastest wireless Internet speeds currently on the market. Wireless-N cards are not much more expensive than their predecessors, the Wireless-G cards. For instance, the D-Link Xtreme N wireless card ($69.99) retails for only $5 more than the Netgear Rangemax Wireless-G card ($64.99).
-
6
Choose among your other options, including the type of monitor, optical drive(s) and CPU you'd like. If you enjoy playing the latest games, consider upgrading from the standard sound and video card choices. If you appreciate freedom of movement, consider adding a wireless keyboard, mouse and printer. You can also pre-load your computer with software--including anti-virus protection--and choose an extended warranty plan.

7
Press the "Add To Cart" button to add your created computer to your shopping basket. Input your credit card information or PayPal account and submit your payment. Your custom built computer will now be shipped to your home.

Tips & Warnings
If you're on a budget, think carefully about how you'll use your computer before you start shopping, so you'll know which upgrades are most important. Research the ever-changing varieties of CPUs before shopping as well, to see which one best suits your needs.
