How to Calculate Steps into Miles

Save

Step into fitness by walking. Buy a pedometer, a device that counts the number of steps you walk during the day. You can use the number of steps to calculate how many miles you walk in an hour or a day.

Things You'll Need

  • Pedometer
  • Attach a pedometer to your body and walk around a quarter-mile track once.

  • Check the pedometer to find the number of steps taken in a quarter-mile.

  • Multiply the steps required to walk a quarter-mile by 4 to find the steps per mile. For example, if you need 500 steps to go once around a quarter-mile track, your number of steps per mile is 2,000 (500 x 4 = 2,000).

  • To find the number of miles you walk in a day, divide the number of steps taken in a day by the number of steps per mile. For example, if you took 5,000 steps in a day and number of steps per mile is 2,000, you walked 2.5 miles that day (5,000/2,000 = 2.5).
