How to Decorate a Teen Boys Room
Teen boys are typically too grown for the bedroom decor they once loved, such as super heroes or dinosaurs. Update your teen son's room and decorate it to reflect who he is today and who he is growing into. Most boys aren't too keen on shopping for paint, carpet and bedding, but you can still include him in the decorating process by asking for his input. Even if he leaves the decor up to you, decorate the room to reflect his personality, lifestyle and interests. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Paint the walls in a neutral color, or use his favorite colors if they aren't too extreme. For example, if he loves the color red, consider painting three of the walls in a neutral color, such as white or a light beige, and the fourth wall red. This wall can serve as an accent wall. If he changes his mind about favorite colors often, consider sticking with a neutral color scheme that can easily be adapted to nearly any decor such as white, beige or gray.

2
Place the furniture in the room in a way that makes sense for him. For example, create zones for sleeping, studying, watching TV and entertaining friends. Purchase a quality bedroom set with a full-size bed, if possible, as he's bigger than he once was and this will most likely be the furniture he moves out with. If new furniture is not feasible, consider painting or staining old furniture to look like new again. Include a bed, dresser, desk and chair if possible.

3
Make the bed with a bed set that matches the style, color scheme and theme of the room, if applicable. For example, if he loves extreme sports, consider a reversible comforter with black on one side and images of his favorite skater, snowboarder or bikes on the other side. Using duvet covers to cover a quality comforter will give you the opportunity to update the covers without having to purchase another comforter later. Reversible styles give him options to easily change the look of his room on a moment's notice. Stripes, plaid or other geometrical patterns work as well.
-
4
Hang curtains and choose a throw rug that complements the bedding. Curtains aren't necessary if there are proper blinds in the window, but include them if you can for decor purposes.
-
5
Accessorize the room with framed wall art, pictures or posters. Large removable graphics are available that depict athletes, team logos, tanks, airplanes and video game characters. Add lights or lamps where necessary, such as his study area. Use a shelf to display his trophies or collections.
-
6
Include plastic storage bins or baskets to help keep him organized. For example, a laundry basket and shoe organizer in the closet, containers on the top shelf of the closet for old toys he wants to hang on to, plastic containers under the bed for extra bedding or out-of-season clothes, and baskets in a corner for sports equipment. Designate a shelf or space for his movies, music, computer, books or video games.

Tips & Warnings
Build the room's decor around a particular theme, such as his favorite sports team, if he isn't likely to change his mind. Otherwise, use a basic color scheme that can work with different fads--such as the latest, greatest video game.
Don't over-decorate his room. The space should be comfortable for him and his friends.
