Double crochet stitches

Crocheting is a great portable hobby that can be taken on long car trips, picnics, boring waiting rooms or your own bedroom on a rainy day. Just a few easy stitches can be combined into interesting projects like scarves, afghans, hats and sweaters. The more you practice, the better you will get.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook (check the yarn label to see what size works best)
  • Scissors or snips

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop with the yarn, twist it once, and pull a second loop through the first loop. This is how you make a slipknot. If you did it right, the loop part should easily get smaller to fit around your crochet hook.

    • 2

Push the slipknot about halfway down the hook, and then put the yarn coming out of the ball or skein over the hook going from right to left. Pull the yarn through the slipknot with the hook. That's one chain stitch. Most projects begin with a line of these stitches, but by itself it can be a tie, used like a ribbon.

    • 3

After making a string of chain stitches, put the hook through one of the chains near the hook. Put the yarn over (right to left) and pull it through the chain. Put the yarn over again (right to left) and pull it through the two loops on the crochet hook. This is a single crochet stitch, and you could make a whole scarf out of these going back and forth (and adding one chain stitch at the end of each row).

    • 4

Wrap the yarn over the hook (right to left) before poking the hook through a chain. Wrap the yarn over again (right to left) and pull it through the chain. Wrap the yarn over from left to right and pull it through two loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over again (left to right) and pull through the last two loops on the hook. This is a double crochet stitch. You could make a small rug out of double crochet. Really thick, chunky yarn and a big hook would be good for this project.

Tips & Warnings

  • The tops of a line of single or double crochet stitches look just like a line of chain stitches. Add more rows just like you would to a chain stitch.

  • Practice to make your stitches even and the tightness the same.
