Gift Wrapping Directions

Gift Wrapping Directions thumbnail
Beautiful wrapping enhances any gift.

Giving a present is thoughtful enough, but presenting a beautifully wrapped package is even better. Wrapping a gift does not have to be a time-consuming production involving expensive supplies. All it takes to wrap a present with style and flair is attention to detail and taking the time to do it right. Coordinating the colors of the wrapping, ribbon and bow with each other and with the occasion always makes for a perfectly wrapped gift. Simple gift wrapping enhances your gift instead of overshadowing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean off a flat surface to work on. If you are using the kitchen table or counter, check to make sure the surface is clean and dry before setting down your supplies.

    • 2

Lay out the wrapping paper, printed side down. If you are using a roll, just unroll some of it and don't cut it yet.

    • 3

Remove the price tag from the gift, or color out the price with a black marker if you can't cleanly remove the label.

    • 4

Place the gift face down on the wrapping paper, right next to the roll, if that's what you are using. On a flat sheet, just center it, and skip steps 5 and 6.

    • 5

Measure the paper to make sure that you have enough to cover both sides of the gift. Gently pull the free end of the rolled wrapping paper up over the side of the gift. Keep going until the end touches the wrapping paper on the other side of the gift. Pull another two inches free, then cut the paper using the roll as a guide to cut a straight line.

    • 6

Center the gift on the wrapping paper.

    • 7

Pull the sides of the wrapping paper up over the gift, one on top of the other. Match stripes or a pattern at the seam, if you can, for a more polished look. Secure the ends with tape.

    • 8

Look at the ends of the gift. You should have just enough wrapping paper to cover the ends. If there is too much, trim some off.

    • 9

Fold the sides on the wrapping paper in toward the gift. Next fold the top down, then fold the bottom up. Secure the overlapping edge with tape. Repeat this for the other end.

    • 10

Wrap ribbon around the box by sliding it under the gift and securing the two ends with tape right at the wrapping paper's seam.

    • 11

Turn the gift over and stick a bow on the ribbon. Use tape, as self-stick bows rarely stay on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use butcher paper, Sunday comics, children's artwork or even cloth instead of commercially printed wrapping paper for a unique presentation.

  • Keep scissors away from small children and ribbon away from dogs, as they can cut themselves or swallow it.

  • Go easy on the tape; you want the recipient to be able to open the gift.
