Rock Salt Crystals

Home fragrances come in a variety of products including room sprays, wax tarts, and candles. Potpourri is a popular option that allows the room to be gently scented without the need of being burned, melted, or sprayed. While some potpourris require several natural dried ingredients, rock crystal potpourri needs only rock salt and few other ingredients to create a home fragrance that is pleasing both to the eyes and nose.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on the apron and rubber gloves to prevent stains on your clothing and skin from the concentrated coloring dyes and fragrance oils. The rubber gloves will also prevent skin irritation from contact with strong fragrance oils.

    • 2

Wash the rock salt with water. Lay the salt on the old bath towels and pat dry. Cleaning the crystals improves their appearance.

    • 3

Allow the rock salt crystals to air dry then pour them into the large glass bowl or jar. Add 1 or 2 drops of the coloring dye and mix. Repeat until you get the desired color. If mixing with the spoon or shaking the container does not spread the color evenly, use your gloved hands to mix.

    • 4

Measure 2 tbs. of dendritic salt and 2 tsp. fragrance oil into the glass measuring cup or bowl. Mix using the metal spoon and pour into the bowl of rock salt crystals. Dendritic salt helps the rock crystal potpourri retain its fragrance longer.

    • 5

Thoroughly distribute the fragrance oil and salt mixture into the rock salt crystals using the spoon or shaking the container with a secured lid.

    • 6

Cover the cookie sheets or work surface with foil or parchment paper. Pour out the mixture onto the cookie sheets and allow to dry before storage or use.

    • 7

Store the rock crystal potpourri in a cello bag or air tight glass container and display in a glass dish.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the scent seems weak, repeat steps 4-7. Avoid using too much fragrance oil or the salt will not dry completely.

  • When the scent fades from use, additional oil may be added to refresh the potpourri.

  • Keep out of reach of children to prevent them from trying to play with or taste the rock crystal potpourri.
