Newborns, especially those who arrive in the winter months, need to have their heads covered to stay warm and protected from the elements. Baby hats must be comfortable and easy to put on the baby's head. Such hats are easy to find in baby clothing stores, but they can be expensive. Fortunately, it's easy to make an inexpensive homemade jersey knit hat for the baby that can also be personalized.
Things You'll Need
- Jersey knit fabric
- Fabric scissors
- Sewing machine
Cut out two half ovals of fabric that are each 12 inches long and 8 inches wide. Lay the fabric pieces directly on top of each other, right sides of the fabric facing each other.
Sew the fabric together around the curved edge, leaving the end opposite the curve open.
Fold over the open edge of the hat 1/2 inch and sew the fold down, tucking the raw edge of the fabric under the seam as you go.
Turn the hat right side out and fold the bottom of the hat up 2 inches. Fold it up 2 more inches, and iron the folds in place.
