How to Trim Hedges Using a Machine

How to Trim Hedges Using a Machine thumbnail
Trim hedges in no time with a power hedge trimmer.

Hedges made up of shrubs and bushes need to be trimmed regularly as a part of yard maintenance. It is important to trim hedges to allow them to grow properly, as well as maintain the appearance of the home's landscape. Instead of trimming your hedges manually with clippers, you can save time by using a hedge-trimming machine. Power hedge trimmers are shearing machines that trim most shrubs and bushes with rotating blades. These devices trim hedges faster than hand clippers and are easy to use.

Power hedge trimmers can be powered either by electricity or by two-cycle gasoline engines. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety goggles, solid shoes, long pants, and work gloves to protect you. Fill the hedge trimmer with gas-oil mix (two-cycle fuel mix) up to the line on the tank. If you are using an electric model, tuck the electrical cord through a belt loop behind you to keep the cord out of your way.

    • 2

Release the safety locks and then pull the starter cable to start up the hedge trimmer engine (electric models, just turn on the switch). Pick the trimmer up with one of your hands on the grip behind the shield, with your other hand on the control handle.

    • 3

Trim your shrubs and bushes by slowly sweeping the blade over them from top to bottom. Avoid trying to cut branches that are too large for the hedge trimmer's blade. Always stand on a firm surface.

    • 4

Switch the machine off when you are finished using it. Clean your hedge trimmer by removing shredded twigs and debris, and then wipe the shield and engine housing down with a soft cloth. Sap from the hedges can dry and gum up the blades if you forget to clean them immediately after use.

    • 5

Lubricate the trimmer's blades by carefully rubbing them with some machine oil and an old rag. Before you store the hedge trimmer, wrap an old towel around the blades to protect them from humidity and rust.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always hold the hedge trimmer with both hands when using it, or you could drop it and hurt yourself.
