How to Compare GPS Tracking

How to Compare GPS Tracking thumbnail
GPS systems use satellites to pinpoint locations on Earth.

Global Positioning System technology, also called GPS technology, allows you to pinpoint geographic locations using an array of geosynchronous satellites. In short, GPS units communicate with satellites to tell you where something is located. Commonly, GPS units help you pinpoint your own location, allowing you to get easier driving or hiking directions. However, so-called "GPS trackers" are also used to help remotely pinpoint the location of other people. Usually, GPS tracking technology is utilized to keep tabs on delivery drivers as they move about their routes, or to help parents track their kids. When comparing GPS tracking units, there are several important features that you need to consider.

Instructions

Consider both active and passive GPS tracking units. Active and passive units both help keep track of vehicles or other items, but they do so very differently according to RM Tracking. An active unit allows you to remotely monitor the GPS tracker's location using a computer. Active tracking is more expensive than passive tracking, but it lets the user pinpoint locations instantly, ideal for concerned parents who want to locate their children. Passive tracking is better suited for businesses who do not need real-time tracking. A passive tracker cannot be monitored remotely; instead, at the end of an employee's shift, you must download the tracker's data to a computer in order to see where the vehicle traveled throughout the day.

Evaluate the size of various tracker models. If you want your GPS tracker to be hidden, the size and shape of the GPS tracker is very important. GPS trackers can be as small as a microchip, able to secretly fit inside a cell phone or other small device. Other trackers can be larger than a shoe box. Large trackers will usually cost less, but if you need to achieve discretion, consider the compact models. Additionally, read the product's online specs or ask a sales person about product noise or light emission. Some consumers purchase a small tracker only to discover that it is still impossible to hide because of on-board flashing lights or occasional "beeping" sounds.

    • 3

Compare battery life. Many trackers last for well over 24 hours, though a few compact models do drain much faster. Make sure your tracker has an estimated battery lifespan that will last as long as necessary to acquire the tracking data you need.

    • 4

Compare additional monitoring options. An advanced GPS tracker can be hardwired into a vehicle's electronic system for remote access. Cygnus Track explains that an advanced GPS tracking system can allow users to monitor the status of door locks, ignition and other vehicle components.

    • 5

Research the tracker's regional compatibility. The name "Global Position System" is deceiving, since many consumer GPS products do not function properly worldwide. Typically, a standard GPS tracker will work within the country it was purchased, though some companies offer special software or monthly subscription fees to provide tracking outside the default region.
