How to Slow Uploading BitTorrent & Only Download

User who wish to download files from BitTorrent but not share those files with other users have the ability to slow the uploading process, but not to stop it completely. It should be noted, however, that because of the nature of BitTorrent, this will also slow your downloads.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch BitTorrent and wait for the program to fully open.

    • 2

Click on the "Options" link at the very top of the programs menu section.

    • 3

Click on "Preferences" after the "Options" menu launches.

    • 4

Click on the "Bandwidth" option when it appears and then search for the "Maximum Upload Rate" box that will show on the screen. In the "Maximum upload rate" box type in "1," and then exit the preferences box.

    • 5

Check your upload screen from the file transfer section of the BitTorrent program to verify that uploads for each user have slowed to the new 1kb/s rate.

Tips & Warnings

  • After a file has been fully downloaded, you can move the file to any other folder on your computer outside of your bitTorrent folder and the file will no longer transfer to other users. This cannot be done, however, until the file is fully downloaded, at which point you may have already uploaded the completed parts to other users.

  • Do not put an upload rate of "0," because zero actually means "unlimited speeds."
