The right SAT prep book can help you get into the college of your choice.

The SAT Reasoning Test--formerly the Scholastic Aptitude Test--plagues millions of students each year. It's a standardized test that is supposed to show your readiness for college. The higher your score, the more likely it is that you'll be able to get into the school of your choice. Most students prepare for this test by using a study guide, but there are a number of choices on the market. To help prepare you for the SAT, you need to choose the SAT preparation book that's right for you.

Instructions

Look for well-known publishers. Your first step should be to look for publishers that know their stuff. Of course, a natural choice is the "Official SAT Study Guide," which is created by CollegeBoard. This book should be in any student's arsenal, as it's the only book that contains practices tests from the makers of the actual test. You should also look for books published by The Princeton Review and Kaplan--these companies offer in-person SAT courses, and the books are an at-home way to benefit from their expertise.

Focus on your weak points. The SAT test has three sections--math, critical reading and writing. While you do want a book that covers all of the information that you need to study, it's also smart to find a book that you can use to improve your skills in your weakest area.

Have some fun when studying for the SAT. When you think about studying for the SAT, you probably think about memorizing vocabulary words and going over math problems. That doesn't have to be the case. While those techniques may work with some people, it may not be right for you. Instead, look for newer books, like "Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to the SAT," which injects a bit of humor into your studies, or one of the novels that uses SAT vocabulary words to improve your skills.

Purchase books that have extras. Some books come with extras that can make your studying easier such as CD-ROMs with practice tests. These little things can improve your studying and save you time.

Spend time in the bookstore. It's great to look online and at reviews of books, but the best way to find which SAT preparation books are right for you is to flip through them at the store. When you do this, you'll find one that just clicks with your own personal style.
