Make this work on a PC.

A controller for the original Xbox allows users to play favorites such as Halo, Fable or Psychonauts. This controller can be modded to become a controller for your PC, allowing you the same control with PC games that you enjoy with your Xbox games. Be aware, though, that performing this procedure will make your controller unusable with your Xbox.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox controller
  • Wire strippers
  • Scissors
  • Male USB adapter cable (USB plugs on both ends)
  • Electrical tape
  • Soldering iron (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Cut off the USB adapter plug on your USB adapter cord about four or five inches below the plug using a pair of scissors. This is the closed rectangular plug, not the one with open corners.

    • 2

Cut off the Xbox controller's plug right at its base. This is the part of the controller that goes into the Xbox.

    • 3

Strip the cord on the Xbox controller. Gently cut into the casing using the wire stripper, but do not cut the wires beneath. Strip off the casing so the colored wires are revealed.

    • 4

Strip the cord of the USB adapter. Once again, strip it so the colored wires are revealed.

    • 5

Strip the wires using your wire strippers. For each, strip so the metal of the wire is revealed.

    • 6

Connect the wires. Match up one wire color from USB plug to the same wire color from the Xbox controller. Splice them together by twisting the two wires together at least three times. Repeat with the rest of the matching colors. There will be a yellow wire left over. Disregard it.

    • 7

Tape up the connection. Wrap the two connected cords together tightly with the electrical tape, making sure to leave none of the wire exposed.

    • 8

Connect the Xbox controller to a PC using your new USB connection.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use a soldering iron, instead of splicing, to solder the wires and make an even more secure connection than simply twisting the wires together.

  • In order to play games, you will need to download drivers for the controller.
