How to Make a Lid for a Wooden Box

If you are trying to organize your things, you might consider putting them in a wooden box. Not only can wooden boxes be used as storage, but they also can provide a decorative piece for your living or family room. Some wooden boxes, however, do not come with lids and look more like crates. If you plan on keeping your items hidden and secure, you can make a simple lid for the box in an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Flat piece of wood
  • Circular saw
  • 2 to 3 hinges
  • 1-inch wood screws
  • Measure the size of the box top opening with a measuring tape so you know how big a piece of wood you need to cut. Measure the thickness of the wooden pieces that make up the box to get a lid that is the same thickness.

  • Draw a pattern on your piece of wood to match the dimensions of the box-top opening. Cut the wood to the correct size using a circular saw. Place the lid on top of the box to ensure it fits properly.

  • Remove the lid. Attach hinges to the back of the inside of the box with the wood screws. The hinges should be spaced evenly apart. If the box is long, place one in the center and then space the other two evenly between the center and the edges.

  • Attach the lid to the other sides of the hinges using the screws. Close and open the box to ensure a good fit.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the box is on the larger side (e.g. a wooden chest), attach a 2- to 3-inch brace made of the same type of wood on top of the box opening. Attach the lid to the brace. Make sure your lid dimensions take into account the width of the brace piece.
