How to Separate Music Genres on a Flash Drive thumbnail
Store music on your flash drive.

A flash drive is a small, portable memory device that functions like an external hard drive. However, it is far smaller than an external hard drive and can often fit on your key chain. You can save any file format to the flash drive, including music files. To better organize the music stored on the portable memory device, you may want to separate the music into specific genre folders.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the flash drive into one of the USB ports on your computer.

    • 2

Select "Start," "My Computer" (or "Computer") and double-click the removable device icon. A window opens with all of the music files you currently have placed on the movable device.

    • 3

Right-click in the window and choose the "New Folder" option. Title this folder one of the genres you want to use. Repeat the process until all of the genre folders you want are created.

    • 4

Click and drag the different audio files into the specific genre folders. You do not need to open the genre windows. Simply dragging the music file onto the folder icon and releasing the mouse places the file inside the folder. Repeat this process until all the music files are inside their correct folders.

    • 5

Close out the flash drive window, right-click the removable device icon and select "Eject" from the context menu. After the icon disappears you can disconnect your flash drive from the computer.
