How to Apply for Social Security for a Child

A social security number for your child provides several benefits. According to the Social Security Administration, your child will need this number for medical coverage, to open a bank account, apply for government benefits and obtain a savings bond. You will also need it to claim her as a dependent on your income tax return. The process of applying for a social security card is simplified for parents of a newborn who apply at the same time they apply for a birth certificate. However, you may apply for a social security number for your child at any time.

      Apply at the hospital when baby is born. The documents for your child's birth certificate will include an option to apply for a social security card also. The agency preparing the birth certificate will send the information to the Social Security Administration and you will receive the Social Security card via mail.

      Complete an Application For a Social Security Card. Obtain this form from a local Social Security Administration office or download it from the official website (see Resources below). Amongst other details, you must supply the child's name, date of birth, place of birth and parents names.

      Provide supporting documents to prove your child's age, identity and citizenship. These could include your child's birth certificate and passport, if any. You must also provide documents that prove your identity, such as a driver's license.
