How to String a Berimbau
Capoeira is a form or martial arts that is commonly practiced in Brazil. This type of martial arts is very unique because there is no contact between the people sparring. Instead of fighting in the usual full contact manner, two participants fight via rhythmic, free flowing dance. Capoeira enthusiasts often employ handstands and back flips when sparring. To set the beat for the dance, a third participant plays a single string instrument called a berimbau. The string on a berimbau is composed of wire and can break or become worn out with use. If this happens, the string will need to be replaced.
Instructions

-
1
Cut off the string that is currently attached to your berimbau using a sharp knife.
-
2
Place the berimbau in a vertical position with the bottom end of the instrument flat against the floor.
-
-
3
Apply pressure on the middle of the bow with your knee while puling down on the top end of the bow with one hand. Berimbaus are usually solid in construction; so don't worry about the wood snapping when you flex it.
-
4
Loop one end of the string over the top end of the berimbau with your free hand and pull the string toward the ground.
-
5
Twist the string around the wooden bow five times leaving a quarter-inch between turns.
-
6
Pull the string straight down after the fifth wrap so that the string now reaches the bottom of the berimbau.
-
7
Lift up the berimbau and loop the string over the bottom end of the berimbau. Tie at least two knots in the string to keep it tight so it doesn't slip off the bow.
