Instructions

    • 1

Find a tablecloth that has an African print. Lay this over the table first.

    • 2

Choose colors from the tablecloth and use those colors to pick out some flowers for decorating the table. Place the fresh flowers in big or small vases and spread them around the table.

    • 3

Print out some pictures of famous black Americans such as Martin Luther King, George Washington Carver, Benjamin Banneker and Rosa Parks. Use 5-inch by 7-inch pictures for a smaller table and 8-inch by 10-inch pictures for a larger table. Look for good pictures online.

    • 4

Put the pictures in frames that stand up. Place them on the table in a random order.

    • 5

Write out some information about each person for who you have a picture and type it out on card stock. Include their birth and death years as well as for what they are most famous. Place these information cards at the base of the picture frames.

    • 6

Check out from the library some books on African-Americans who have contributed to society or purchase your own. Set these on the table near the pictures of the persons.

    • 7

Type out poetry from famous African-Americans, such as Maya Angelou and Phillis Wheatley, using decorative fonts. Print the poems out on decorative paper and either frame or just lay the decorative paper on the table.

    • 8

Set out books written by African-American authors, such as Alex Haley or W.E.B. Dubois, for your guests to peruse.

    • 9

Have a radio, with a CD player, in the center of the table. Place a stack of CDs of African-American music near the CD player. Allow guests to choose which music to play.

    • 10

Get some curling ribbon that coordinates with the flowers and the tablecloth. Cut varying lengths of the ribbon and scrape with the blade of the scissors to curl. Spread these out randomly around the table.

Tips & Warnings

  • Along with the music CDs, you could also have voice recordings available for an author’s books and poems.

  • If you cannot find an appropriate tablecloth, look at the fabric store. Fabric stores always have a variety of African style prints for sale, which you could use for a tablecloth.
