1
Consider the style of the furniture. If it is traditional, choose a traditional chevron-style or plaid fabric. Modern furniture pairs well with crisp, clean cotton in bold, bright colors. White fabric is a universal color for upholstered pieces and never goes out of style. Consider the scale of the furniture. Large furniture can handle bigger prints, while smaller pieces will do well with small-scale prints.

2
Pick a color that matches or complements the room in which you are placing the furniture. Take into consideration where the furniture will be used and who will be using it. If the furniture is to be placed in a dining area or used by small children, use a darker-toned fabric that will hide stains.

Consider durability and thread count. The more tightly woven the fabric is, the more durable. Fabric that is woven, rather than printed on, tends to fare better in the wear and tear department. Canvas fabric is a good choice for furniture that will receive a lot of use.

Take a look at natural fabrics such as cotton, cotton blend, leather, linen, wool and silk. Cotton is appropriate for use in informal rooms such as family rooms, but may require a surface stain resistant treatment. Cotton blends fair much better and hold up well to kids and family. Leather is an impervious fabric choice and holds up well to all kinds of abuse. Choose silk and linen fabric for less used rooms in the home. Wool is a good overall choice for sturdiness and durability.

Take a look at synthetic fabric choices. One of the most popular of these is microfiber. This fabric is stain resistant and holds up well in the harshest usage conditions. Olefin and acrylic are options that are both durable and attractive.
