If you have a computer and an Internet connection, odds are you have been affected by Spyware. Spyware comes from files that are placed on your computer to track which web sites you visit. Pop-ups can also gather information from your computer if you click on them. It is important to protect your computer and personal information by blocking spyware and unwanted pop-ups.

  1. Block spyware and pop-ups from your computer.

      Use your Windows Firewall protection already installed on your computer. Click on the start button in the bottom-left corner, click "Run," type Firewall.cpl, and them click "Ok." On the General tab, click the "On" to turn on the firewall.

      Set your computer software to automatically update. Click the "Start" button in the bottom-left corner, click on "Control Panel," click on "Automatic Updates" and make sure the button beside Automatic (recommended) is darker. This should include your virus protection and Microsoft. Microsoft will generate service packs when an update is available, keeping your system protected.

      Install a virus protection program that also blocks spyware onto your computer. Use one of the well-known programs such as Avast, Ad-ware, Norton's or McAfee. Be sure the program you choose offers spyware protection and removal.

      Download a spyware removal tool. These are specifically designed to remove the spyware already on your computer. Find a progam by searching online for "spyware removal." Make sure the tool you choose offers additional protection after spyware is removed. After downloading the tool, you will also be protected from spyware.

      Get a toolbar with pop-up blocker. Most of the search engine tool bars offer this option. Type in toolbar followed by a dot and then engine name you want to use such as toobar.yahoo.com, toolbar.google.com, or toolbar.msn.com. Also for explorer users, click on the tools at the top of the screen, go to pop-up blocker, and click turn on.

      Do not click on banner ads, pop-ups or open files that are from an unfamiliar source. Any time you download information onto your computer it could contain spyware.
