Instructions

    • 1

Preheat the oven as directed by your recipe and spray the insides of the two round cake pans with cooking spray.

    • 2

Dust the inside of the sprayed pans with flour, turning the pans upside down to knock out any excess flour.

    • 3

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pans and bake as directed by your recipe.

    • 4

Remove the cakes from the oven and allow to cool completely.

    • 5

Turn one of the cakes out of the pan onto a cake plate.

    • 6

Spread ½ c. of cake frosting over the top surface of the cake.

    • 7

Flip the other round cake pan directly over the frosted surface of the base cake to stack the second round cake onto the first, with the frosting in between the two cakes. Align the two stacked cakes.

    • 8

Set a piece of parchment paper or paper towel on top of the cake and draw the outline of the cake with a marker on the parchment paper.

    • 9

Cut the circle out of the parchment with a pair of scissors, and fold the circle in half.

    • 10

Draw half a heart on the folded circle, with the center of the heart along the fold.

    • 11

Use the scissors to cut out the half-heart shape from the folded paper.

    • 12

Open the paper and lay it on top of the cake.

    • 13

Trim the stacked cakes with a long, serrated knife into a heart shape. Discard the excess cake bits.

    • 14

Spread the remaining 1 ½ cup cake frosting over the top and sides of the two-layer heart-shaped cake.
