How to Change a Headlight on a 1996 Corolla

The 1996 Toyota Corolla was designed with a composite headlight system, which means the headlight bulb is replaced when needed and not the entire headlight assembly, which is required for a sealed headlight system. The 1996 Corolla has separate low beam and high beam headlight bulbs. Ensure your safety when driving at night or in poor weather conditions by replacing the headlight bulbs when they burn out.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the hood of the Toyota Corolla and locate the back of the headlights. You will see two wires connected to the light bulbs. The outside wire connects to the low beam headlight, and the inside wire connects to the high beam headlight.

    • 2

Press in on the locking tab on the back of the low beam headlight connector and pull the connector down, off of the bulb.

    • 3

Twist the bulb and the round bulb holder to the left and pull out to remove the bulb from the headlight assembly.

    • 4

Lift up on the bulb holder clip and pull the bulb out of the holder. Keep the holder for the replacement bulb and discard the old bulb.

    • 5

Push the replacement bulb into the holder until the bulb holder clip locks in place.

    • 6

Insert the bulb and bulb holder into the headlight assembly and twist it to the right to lock it in place.

    • 7

Plug the headlight connector into the bulb. You will hear a click when the headlight connector is properly connected.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 2-7 for the other low beam headlight and the two high beam headlights.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not touch the glass part of the bulb with your hands. Oils on your skin will shorten the lifespan of your headlight bulb.
