How to Avoid Most Arguments with Your Partner

Avoid this.

Chest tightening, short breaths and anxiety build-up are all symptoms that an argument is about to occur or has begun. If you feel this way often, perhaps the person you love knows how to push your buttons, or maybe you're overly sensitive. Or you may be in a generally good relationship, except for the random arguments. In the latter case you might need a strategy to avoid the drama that's harming your relationship.

Instructions

    • 1

Stay on subject during disagreements. Do not bring past transgressions up and declare total war. When you stay on subject, there is less potential for put-downs and sarcasm, which can cause long-term damage.

    • 2

Realize that the argument may center on your need to be right. This is never advantageous and can quickly result in any situation escalating out of control.

    • 3

Take a moment and step away before an argument becomes too heated. Try to figure out if there are any underlying concerns that have nothing to do with the situation at hand. Then address that situation in a respectful manner.

    • 4

Understand that arguments take a toll on your health, especially in women. According to Psychology Today, women often stew over the argument long after it's done, causing stress hormones and blood pressure to rise and reducing the effectiveness of their immune systems.

    • 5

Just drop it. Ask yourself how important the dispute is, and what it's worth in relation to the longevity of your relationship. Think about this and, after reasonably and respectfully communicating with your partner on the subject, let it go.

Tips & Warnings

  • When we are happy and secure with ourselves, there is less desire for meaningless arguments.

  • Tape a couple of your arguments and, weeks later, come back to them, and diplomatically discuss what you hear.
