How to Enable the Task Manager That Is Disabled by the Administrator

When your computer gets compromised, a virus often disables the task manager so you will not be able to kill its processes. Other times, you might have a corrupt entry in the registry. Although you lose control of your system without the task manager, there are still many things you can do to solve the problem. The process involves changing some registry values, so set a restore point in your system before you continue if you want maximum security.

Instructions

  1. Setting a Restore Point Before Editing the Registry

    • 1

Go to your Start menu and select the Programs list.

    • 2

Go to "Accessories" and then to "System Tools."

    • 3

      Click "System Restore."

    • 4

Select "Create a Restore Point" and click "Next." Write a description of your restore point in the next window.

    • 5

      Click the "Create" button.

    Enabling the Task Manager

    • 6

Click your Start menu and click "Run."

    • 7

Write "REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f" without the quotation marks around it in the text box of the window.

    • 8

      Click "OK."

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have to kill some processes from the virus because they disable the task manager after you tried enabling it repeatedly, use the "taskkill /im" command in the command line. Go to your Start menu and click "Run" just like you did in the last section and write "cmd" to access the command line. Once there, write "taskkill /im process," replacing "process" with the name of the executable you want to stop.
