How to Troubleshoot HD DVR Resolution
Most cable and satellite companies give you the option of using a DVR with your service. The DVR can record live programming and play it back at a later date. If you subscribe to the high definition service through your cable/satellite provider you are given an HD DVR. However, you may discover the HD DVR is not recording in high definition, in which case you need to troubleshoot the issues in order to obtain the best possible picture quality.

1
Check the cable connection from both the receiver to the DVR (if you are using two separate devices) and the DVR to the television. You need to use an HDMI cable to connect all three devices. If you are not using an HDMI cable you are not going to receiver or record HD programming through the DVR.

2
Power on the HD receiver, DVR and your HD television. Press the "Menu" button on the receiver's remote control, then select "Options" and finally "Aspect Ratio." Set the aspect ratio to what your television is (either 720p or 1080i). This changes the picture quality of the television and allows you to record content in HD.

Make sure you are actually recording an HD station and programming. When you receive HD service there are always two stations for the same program, one in standard definition and the other in high definition. Always choose the HD programming for recording. For example AT&T U-Verse's standard definition station 6 is channel 1006 in HD.

Go to the "Playback" mode on your DVR and select old recorded content you no longer want. HD recordings take up a large amount of room on the built-in hard drive. Once the hard drive is full you can no longer record HD content. Delete programs by selecting the shows and press the "Delete" option. This makes room on the DVR and allows you to record additional HD content.
