How to Drain a State Hot Water Heater thumbnail
Drain your State water heater occasionally to clean it out.

State has been a trusted name in water heaters since 1948. They manufacture and sell over 500 different water heater models. State water heaters work the same as those from any other manufacturer: They hold water in a tank, where it is heated with either gas or electricity. The heated water is then pumped throughout the house as it is needed. Sometimes debris, rust and other materials can build up in the tank. In that case, you should drain your State water heater. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the hot water heater. This may either be a switch in the hot water heater closet or a circuit at the main panel.

    • 2

Shut off the water inlet on the tank by turning the cold water supply valve clockwise.

    • 3

Go to the closest hot water faucet to the tank. Open this up. This will equalize the pressure in the tank and allow the water to drain.

    • 4

Attach a garden hose to the drain outlet on the State water heater. Place the other end of the hose in a proper drainage spot, such as a basement drain or sewer drain.

    • 5

Open the drain valve. Allow the water to drain out.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use caution when draining the water, as it may be hot.

  • The above instructions are just a guideline. Always follow the specific instructions for your particular State hot water heater.
