How to Cast Resin Models
Resin casting is one way to create a variety of objects like figurines and trinkets. The resin material is mixed with a catalyst and then poured into a mold purchased at a hobby store. There are many different types of resins available. One of the simplest to use is acrylic, which is suitable for use by children when supervised by an adult. Follow the proper mixing guidelines and procedures to guarantee your success when casting this type of resin.

1
Mix the resin and catalyst in a mixing cup following the mixing ratio prescribed by the manufacturer. Ratios of resin to catalyst vary, so pay careful attention to your product's instructions for mixing.
-
2
Set the mold for the first layer on top of a newspaper or cloth. Pour the resin material into the mold form.

3
Pour the resin into the rest of the mold pieces as described in Step 2, if your object requires several different molds. Take note that various layers of an object may require slightly different mixing ratios of resin to catalyst, so check your product instructions carefully and mix the resin in separate containers.

Set the forms aside to allow the resin to dry and cure as instructed by the manufacturer. Curing times range from four to 24 hours. Tap the mold lightly after the curing time has elapsed and listen for a clacking noise. When you hear this, it is time to release the cast from the form. Pull the object from the mold. It should slide out fairly easily.

Carefully file away excess burrs from the object or sand it with a light 300-grit sandpaper. Clean the mold with a towel.
