How to Clean the Rust Off a Steel & Metal Knife

Not taking care of your knives can result in rust forming on the blade. This makes using the knife less effective. - Scrubbing pad
- Steel wool
- Sandpaper
- Water-displacing lubricant
- Mineral oil
- Face mask
- Work gloves
- Rust remover
- Cloth

Scrape off the rust with steel wool or sandpaper. For difficult rust stains, add a lubricant to the metal blade. Spray a water-displacing lubricant (like WD-40) directly onto the knife. Allow it to soak in for a few minutes, then scrub again using the steel wool. Alternately, use mineral oil. Apply a small amount to the blade with a paper towel. Wait a few minutes, then scrub the rust stains with steel wool.

Make a paste of one part white vinegar to two parts table salt. Apply the paste to the metal blade with a scrubbing pad. Wait 10 minutes, then scrub with a scrubbing pad.

Apply a rust remover to difficult rust stains using a paper towel or scrubbing pad. Let the rust absorb the substance for several minutes, then scrub at the rust stains. Wipe the knife clean with a cloth.
