How to Deal with Your Manipulative Boss

Remember not to let emotion get the better of you at work.

The classic manipulative boss uses his position of power to make you do things, and he's never polite about it. He might put you in awkward situations, pit you against your coworkers and muddy up the office with politics. While such people usually are very difficult to neutralize, there are some tips you can keep in mind to help you deal with your manipulative boss without fear of retaliation.

Instructions

    • 1

Set boundaries. You can politely refuse to discuss other coworkers. If your boss shouts or treats you badly, wait until he calms down and tell him -- politely -- that you feel you should be treated in a more professional manner. Being assertive will help your boss to realize that you can't be pushed around.

    • 2

Tell your micromanaging boss that you are confident you can do the task you've been assigned, and then set up a meeting to discuss the completed project.

    • 3

Discuss the problems with your boss directly. Stand your ground and remain professional at all times. Work toward gaining a common ground.

    • 4

Report your boss to the people above him or to your company's human resources department if he crosses the line or acts against established company policy. Getting a reprimand from high above can often work wonders with a manipulator. This step should be a last resort, used in extreme cases of threats or intimidation.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your work situation does not improve, it might be time to look for a new job.
