How to Recognize and Treat Raynaud's Syndrome

Raynaud's syndrome is caused by a restriction in blood vessels when the temperature changes from hot to cold. The body is attempting to retain heat and overreacts to the temperature change. Raynaud's syndrome can affect the face, hands and feet in particular, and is more common in women than in men, and although uncomfortable, is not usually debilitating. There are some things to make living with Raynaud's syndrome more bearable.

Instructions

    • 1

Exercise and learn to relax. Raynaud's syndrome is often exacerbated by stress. Exercise can release endorphins which helps reduce stress. Relaxation techniques including meditation and yoga can increase body awareness and decrease stress as well.

    • 2

Stay away from smoking or smokers. Smoking causes blood vessels to tighten or constrict, and may increase Raynaud's symptoms. Caffeinated beverages and foods may also worsen symptoms for the same reasons.

    • 3

Wear warm clothes in the cold to prevent extreme temperature fluctuations. Layer clothing in order to remove as needed as well. Keep your house and car as warm as necessary to avoid symptoms.
