How to Stop Cell Phone Spam

How to Stop Cell Phone Spam thumbnail
There are several ways to stop spam on your cell phone.

Cell phone spam is one of the most annoying things you can receive. Not only do these calls waste minutes on your plan, but if they come in the form of text messages, these messages can cost you money every time you receive one. Luckily, there are a few simple steps you can take to stop the majority of cell phone spam.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your carrier immediately after receiving a spam text message or call. While they may not be able to do anything immediately, you may be able to have the charge removed from your bill--especially if you receive multiple calls or texts.

    • 2

Log in to your cell phone account online and access the messaging preferences. Activate the setting that blocks messages from the Internet. Most spam messages come from over the Internet, and this setting will block all incoming Internet-based texts.

    • 3

Register your cell phone number with the National Do Not Call Registry. This puts your phone number in a database of numbers that telemarketers cannot call or text without receiving huge fines.

    • 4

File a complaint to the FCC using Form 1088. If you are receiving spam from the same source repeatedly, the FCC may look into your case.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try not to give out your cell phone number unless absolutely necessary. Free ringtones or downloads come from third-party vendors who may use the number to send you spam.
