How to Make a Soy Butter Candle
Soy butter candles are more often referred to as "massage candles." This special type of candle is made from all-natural soy wax and can actually be used as a body lotion if it is scented with body-safe fragrance oil or left unscented. They are relatively easy to make at home, as long as you have the proper materials on hand.
Things You'll Need
- 2 cups of 100 percent soy wax
- 1 oz. of shea butter
- 1 tbsp. sweet almond oil
- 3 6-oz. metal tins
- 2 soy wax wicks for candles 2 to 3 inches in diameter
- 1 tsp. body-safe essential or fragrance oil (optional)
- Microwave-safe measuring cup
Instructions

1
Purchase the materials you need from a wholesale bath and beauty supplier such as Wholesale Supplies Plus or Natures Garden Candles. You do not need a resale permit or retail license to buy from these companies.
-
2
Place the soy wax, shea butter and sweet almond oil into the measuring cup and melt the wax slowly, in 30-second intervals--stir the mixture between each interval. Do not allow the mixture to boil.

3
After the ingredients are melted, stir in the fragrance or essential oil of your choice. If you prefer, you can leave the mixture unscented--this is best for skin that is sensitive.
-
4
Pour the wax into the metal tins, dividing it evenly between the three containers.
-
5
Place wicks into the middle of the containers immediately after pouring the candles.
-
6
Allow the candles to cure, or set, for at least 24 hours before using them.
-
7
Use the massage candles by lighting the wicks, and then allowing a small pool of wax to form. Blow out the light, and pour the wax into your hand or onto your skin, holding it at least 6 inches away--the wax will not be hot enough to burn you. Rub the soy wax into your skin.

Tips & Warnings
Soy butter candles are not primarily used for scenting rooms, and don't distribute scent well compared to traditional candles.
Do not leave a soy butter candle unattended while it is burning.
