Felines can develop this condition as well, and symptoms of hypertension in cats include dilated pupils, vision problems, seizures and lethargy. Treatment can include medications, change in diet and regular monitoring of the cat's blood pressure.

1. Test for underlying health conditions. High blood pressure in cats may sign another medical problem such as kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Follow your veterinarian's advice and allow your cat to undergo a complete physical examination to check its overall health.

2. Serve your feline a low-sodium diet. Choose brands that offer reduced-salt alternatives for cats with hypertension or kidney problems.

3. Give your cat plenty of water. Water helps dilute sodium. Provide fresh water daily and incorporate canned pet food into your cat's diet. Check the sodium content of canned food before serving it to your pet; opt for low-sodium options.

4. Use medications. Administer your cat's heart or hypertension medication as directed to help reduce and manage its blood pressure. Medications for felines with high blood pressure include calcium channel blockers, beta-blockers and diuretics.

5. Monitor regularly. Periodically visit a veterinary clinic to have your cat's blood pressure checked.
