How to Change the Car Battery in a Honda Civic 98 LX

The car battery in the Honda Civic 98 LX supplies electricity to run the cars many electrical components. Many owners realize they have a problem with their battery when they find they can't start their car. If your Honda Civic's battery no longer holds a charge, replace the battery. A mechanic is not needed to replace the battery; with only a few tools you can replace it yourself.

Things You'll Need

• 10-mm wrench
• Wire brush
• Replacement battery

Instructions

1. Engage the emergency brake and ensure the ignition is in the "Off" position.

2. Open the hood of the Honda Civic and locate the battery on the back, left side of the engine compartment.

3. Pull up on the protective cover of the negative battery cable, use the 10-mm wrench to loosen the wire bolt and lift the wire off of the negative terminal. The negative battery cable is often black. It is connected to the terminal with the "-" symbol.

4. Lift the protective cover of the positive battery cable, loosen the wire with the 10-mm wrench and pull it off of the terminal. Positive battery cables are often red. The cable is connected to the battery terminal with the "+" symbol.

5. Loosen the bolt on the bracket that secures the battery to the battery holder with the 10-mm wrench.

Tips & Warnings

• Always disconnect the negative battery cable first and connect it last when replacing the battery. This prevents damage to many electrical components in the vehicle if you accidentally touch a metal tool to the positive terminal and the car body at the same time.
