How to Open a Zip File on Windows XP

A decade ago you would have had to download and install third-party software to your computer in order to open a compressed ZIP archive file. The Windows XP operating system, however, has the ability to open, extract and create these ZIP files already built in when you turn on your computer for the first time. Opening a ZIP file in Windows XP is a lot like opening any other type of file on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ZIP file you'd like to open. If you do not know where the file is on your computer's hard drive, click "Start" and then "Search" to search for it by either file name or file type.

    • 2

Right-click on the icon for the ZIP archive file you'd like to open.

    • 3

Click "Open" to open the ZIP archive file and display its contents on your computer screen.
