Java is a type of Web element that must be installed on your computer in order for your Web browser to properly display a lot of Internet sites. If you visit sites that have chat rooms, games or videos embedded in them you're going to need Java on your computer. If you want to download Java onto a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 2, you'll need to employ your computer's Web browser.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your computer's Web browser. The default Web browser of Windows XP Service Pack 2 is Internet Explorer (there is an icon for this program on your desktop), but you can use any Web browser you'd like.

    • 2

Go to the main Java website (see "References" section for link).

    • 3

Click on the red button that is located in the middle of the page that you're looking at that is labeled "Free Java Download." This will take you to a different page.

    • 4

Click on the red button at the top of the screen labeled "Free Java Download."

    • 5

Click on the "Save As" button from the small gray window that appears in your Web browser. This will download the Java installation file to your Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer. Once the file is completely downloaded, you can double click on it with your mouse to install it on your machine.
