Clear Safari's history.

Safari is a web browser made by Apple. Native to Macs, iPhones and iPads, it's also available for Windows. Safari, like most other browsers, save a running "History" of Internet activity--primarily a list of the websites and pages you visit. Safari's History allows you (and the browser) to quickly return to sites that you have visited before, by auto-filling URLs as you type in the Address Bar, or by choosing previously-visited sites from the program's History menu or Top Sites page. Occasionally, Safari's History can get long and cumbersome. When this happens, you can delete, or "clear," the History with Safari's "Clear History" option.

Instructions

  1. Clearing Safari's History

    • 1

      Open Safari for Windows.

    • 2

Click "History" on the menu bar to open the History menu.

    • 3

Scroll to the bottom of the History menu and choose "Clear History." Safari displays a warning dialog box, asking if you are sure you want to clear the history. Notice the "Also reset Top Sites" check box. If you select this check box, Safari will also delete your Top Site entries, and then rebuild Top Sites base on future browsing.

    • 4

Click the "Clear" button to clear Safari's History. You'll start fresh with an empty history, and it will start to rebuild based on your future Internet activity.

Tips & Warnings

  • Safari also saves a "cache" of web pages, movies, videos, and graphics for the sites you visit on your computer's hard drive. After time, the cache can get quite large and can take up a lot of space on your computer. You can empty the cache like this: In Safari, press Ctrl-Alt-E, and then click the "Empty" button in the "Are you sure you want to empty the cache" dialog box.

  • If you want to clear more than just the History list, such as cookies, the cache, web page previews, the Download window, and more, use Safari's "Reset Safari" option located on the "Edit" menu.

  • When you clear either the History the Cache, these actions are irreversible---you can't get them back. So make sure that's what you want to do.
