The vehicle identification number (VIN) is a number unique to every automobile. For vehicles made from 1981 onward, running the VIN for a used car lists information such as ownership, accidents and repairs, and odometer readings. VIN information empowers a used car buyer and arms him with the facts to make an informed consumer decision. Two options for checking the history of a used car using its VIN are through the DMV or a free-service website.

      Obtain the VIN by checking the driver's side dashboard area or the driver's side door area where the door closes. The VIN is also listed on a car's insurance and registration information.

      Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles offiice. Using the VIN, fill out the form that requests information for a vehicle. Submit the form in person or online and pay the processing fee. DMV information obtained using a VIN is limited to records filed with the DMV, such as registration information and police reports.

      Go to a free-service website. Three frequently accessed sites are Carfax, AutoCheck and The Unofficial DMV Guide. Input the VIN in the field on the home page. Information such as problems, title changes and accident reports will appear. Beware of items that raise a red flag, such as ownership that shows the used car was once owned by a taxi company.
