How to Become a Plus Size Model in Louisiana

How to Become a Plus Size Model in Louisiana thumbnail
Modeling doesn't require you to be a size 2.

No longer is modeling just for those wearing size 2 jeans. The world of modeling has expanded its reach to average-sized women that wear clothes between the sizes of 12 to 16. Plus size models average 5 feet and 11 inches in height, and are generally required to be taller than standard models. The world of plus size modeling is competitive in Louisiana, but having perseverance and taking the necessary steps can help you achieve your dream of being a plus size model.

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out why you want to be a model. Potential modeling agencies and clients will want to know this about you. Keep in mind that modeling is more than just wearing nice clothes and having picture of you taken. Consider the unglamorous parts of the plus size modeling world when thinking about your reasons for pursuing a career in this field.

Get headshots taken. Headshots are close-up photographs that show how you look naturally. When you get headshots taken, do not wear makeup and pull your hair back so your face is visible. The back of your headshot should include information about you: name, address, email address, website (if applicable), phone number (s), height, your measurements (bust, waist and hips), clothing sizes and shoe size.

Most of the Louisiana photographers that take headshot photographs are in New Orleans, Metairie, Lafayette, Baton Rouge and Bossier City. However, small-town professional photographers also take headshot photographs.

Find representation in Louisiana. Find a modeling or talent agency in Louisiana that represents plus size models. Big-name agencies will have casting calls periodically that will require you to go to the agency's office in person. The scouts will ask you questions, look at your pictures, and ask you to walk around the room for them.

The cities that have the most modeling agencies in them include New Orleans, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, Metairie and Shreveport. However, Lafayette and New Orleans have the most agencies in the Louisiana.

Build your portfolio. A portfolio is a photo album used to show potential clients, and acts as a model's resume. Include all of your best pictures, pictures that have appeared in catalogues and pictures taken for magazines in your portfolio. Make sure you include information about all the work you have done.

Modeling agencies can assist with building a physical portfolio and one through their website.

Establish clients. New plus size models must first meet with the potential clients in person, like a job interview. Follow their instruction on what to wear. Act professional and friendly; attitude goes a long way in this business. After you have established a base of clients in Louisiana, it will be easier to find clients nationally.

In Louisiana, most of your clients will be from New Orleans simply because it is one of the biggest and busiest cities in the state. However, it is likely you may have clients from Lafayette, Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas because of their big-city nature.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not get discouraged if you get rejected by a modeling agency. This has happened to the best top models. Do not take the rejection personally. Instead, view it as a chance to find a better agency to represent you.

  • Never pay anyone to work for them. Scam modeling agencies often ask their clients for money to secure clients or modeling classes. People should pay you to work for them, not the other way around.
