How to Catch Trout With Bait

Learn how to catch trout with bait.

Trout fishing has many techniques, and though most anglers associate trout with fly-fishing, trout can also be caught with live bait, lures, corn and a number of other items. Trout can be found all over the world, in freshwater, including specimens like the rainbow, lake or brook trout, and in saltwater such as the speckled trout found along the Gulf Coast, or the brown trout found in Australia. Catching trout with bait all depends on the region you're fishing in. You wouldn't want to use live bait not native to the region, so use discretion as to picking your bait. Typically, live bait you can find near the shore is the best to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Find worms, crickets, grasshoppers, grubs, minnows, crayfish or shrimp. Choose the most available bait near the water source that you'll be fishing.

    • 2

Hook the bait through the tough part of the body, the abdomen or thorax for insects and through the tail for shrimp. Shrimp should be attached so that the shrimp body forms to the hook as you slide it onto the barb. For all bait, hook it securely while making it look as natural as possible hanging on the hook.

    • 3

Cast the bait out and allow it to drift in the current near the water surface. Trout like to come right up to the surface to grab a bite.

    • 4

Fish in front of or behind rocks in faster moving rivers, depending on the current's direction. While out in lakes, look for deeper pools, or shallows under the cover of debris such as fallen trees. Shorelines near tidal estuaries or marsh land are great spots for speckle trout.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use corn, cereal or marshmallows when out fishing for trout. Trout love starchy and sugary foods, and this can be fun for kids when out trout fishing.

  • Ensure that you have a valid fishing license if required by law.
