How to Become a Dental Hygienist in Pennsylvania
A dental hygienist doesn't just give hygiene care to patients. A dental hygienist can also give screenings for oral cancer and advise patients on how to prevent future dental problems. Requirements for becoming a dental hygienist vary from state to state. In Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry is the governing body that sets these requirements.

Get a degree from an accredited school. Get a two-year associates degree or a bachelor's or master's degree from a dental hygiene program. You must have this degree before being allowed to take the state exams. You can find information about accredited programs from the American Dental Association (see second link in Resources).

Prove you have completed schooling. Submit your graduation certificate to the Pennsylvania State Board of Dentistry.

Pass the test. Pass written and clinical exams in Pennsylvania. According to the Pennsylvania Dental Association, you need to pass both the National Board Dental Hygiene exam and the North East Regional Board exam to become a dental hygienist in Pennsylvania.

Prepare for dental hygiene school early by enrolling in science classes while still in high school.
You must always keep your license current. If you don't renew your dental hygienist license you won't be able to work in the field in Pennsylvania.
