DIY: Sparkly Napkin Rings Made Out of Toilet Paper Holders
Cardboard toilet paper rolls are an unexpectedly lowly material to use in the creation of these glimmering and festive napkin holders. However, after they're covered in shiny paint, glue, and matching or contrasting glitter, you'll forget the origins of your pretty napkin rings. This is a terrific project for kids, too: After an adult cuts the cardboard tube, the kids can do the rest with only a little supervision.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard toilet paper roll
- Tape measure or ruler
- Pencil
- Sharp utility knife
- Gold or silver spray enamel paint, matte or gloss
- White glue (the kind that dries clear)
- Small paint brush
- Paper plate
- 8 oz shaker bottle of glitter
Instructions
-
-
1
Measure 1 1/2 inches down the length of the cardboard toilet paper tube, and make a mark with a pencil. Measure 1 1/2 inches straight down from that mark, and make another mark. Continue to measure and mark down the length of the cardboard tube until you've made 5 pencil marks on the side of the tube.
-
2
Cut the cardboard tube into six equal size rings by following the pencil marks to indicate the top of each ring, and cutting around the cardboard tube with a utility knife.
-
-
3
Spray paint each cardboard ring, inside and out, with gold or silver spray paint. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly, then spray paint a second coat on the outside only. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
-
4
Spread a coat of white glue onto the entire outside surface of one of the painted cardboard rings using a small paint brush.
-
5
Hold the ring over the paper plate while sprinkling glitter from the shaker bottle onto the glue-covered surface. Rotate the ring as you sprinkle to distribute the glitter over the entire glued surface. Put down the shaker and roll the ring in the excess glitter that fell onto the paper plate. Apply gentle pressure as you roll to press the glitter pieces firmly into the glue. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the glitter coverage on the ring.
-
6
Shake the ring gently over the paper plate to dislodge any loose glitter, then set the ring aside to allow the glue to dry. Repeat steps 4 through 6 for the remaining cardboard rings.
