How to Power Shift a Honda Between Gears

Power shifting is a motorcycle riding technique that allows the rider to shift into a higher gear without the use of the clutch. When used on a race track, power shifting can help to maintain the rider's speed without the interruption of disengaging the motor. Since most races are won or lost in just a fraction of a second, going through the whole process of pulling in the clutch, shifting and releasing the clutch can rob a racer of that precious split-second advantage. Learning how to power shift is simple, but requires practice to use the skill effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Start your motorcycle and shift into first gear. Accelerate away from your starting point, maintaining a moderate and constant speed without rolling the throttle forward or back.

    • 2

Push upward on the shift lever lightly. Apply only enough pressure to the lever to lift it until it stops. Do not push hard enough to pop the shift lever into second gear.

    • 3

Roll the throttle forward slightly to decrease the engine speed (RPM). The shift lever should pop upwards into second gear. Release the pressure on the shift lever as soon as the gear change is done and roll the throttle back to accelerate.

    • 4

Practice shifting into higher gears as your comfort level and speeds increase.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not close the throttle completely. A small forward snap or roll is all that is needed to drop the engine speed enough to engage the next gear.

  • Start at a lower speed, gradually increasing your speed and RPMs as you begin to gain confidence in your power shifting skills.

  • Do not use power shifting to shift into lower gears. While it is possible to do, down shifting without the clutch will create a higher engine speed that may cause the rear wheel to lose traction.
