A laptop's memory is what the computer uses to load and run programs.

A Dell laptop's memory or RAM is what the computer uses to load and run programs. The more RAM a laptop has the better because it allows for programs to run smoothly. RAM can be added or replaced if the memory slots are all taken up. The replacement RAM should be compatible with the laptop's motherboard. Refer to the laptop's user manual or specifications for RAM compatibility.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the laptop from its AC adapter, then turn the laptop over (bottom up) and remove the battery. Most Dells have a battery release latch on the bottom of the laptop that can be pushed to pop the battery up from its slot. Once it pops up, it can be removed from the laptop.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the memory cover. Different Dell laptops have different size covers, but most often it is rectangular and roughly in the middle of the laptop.

    • 3

Remove the current memory by pushing the metal clips on either side of the memory module away from each other at the same time. The memory module will pop up at an angle and it can then be removed. Hold the memory by the edges. Different Dell laptops will have different arrangements for the memory. Some stack the memory one on top of the other, others will have them side by side.

    • 4

Insert the new memory module into the Dell's memory slot. Insert it at an angle. The memory can only go in one way and will slide into the connector. Push the memory module down and into the slot. The side clips will snap into place, securing the memory module.

    • 5

Replace the memory cover and screw it in.

    • 6

      Replace the battery.

Tips & Warnings

  • Touch a piece of metal or wear an anti-static wrist strap to avoid damaging the laptop or memory modules from static shock.
