Most PC gamers have to settle for their keyboard and mouse to play games on their computer. However, Xbox 360 owners can connect their wired or wireless Xbox 360 controller directly to their computer to play any game that lets you configure the control settings for a gamepad. Setup is simple and only takes a few minutes. Keep in mind that this only works with the Xbox 360 wireless and wired controllers.

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox 360 controller software
  • Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver
  • Windows XP SP2 or later

Wired Controller

  • Download and install the software needed to run the controller (link in Resources). Choose "Controller" under section one and "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" under section two and select your operating system and language for sections three and four. Click "Go" and the link on the following page to start the download. Open the file and follow the instructions to install the software.

  • Insert the controller's USB cable to any of your computer's USB ports. Your computer will read the connection automatically.

  • Check to make sure the controller connected and is functioning properly by clicking the "Start" button on the Desktop, typing " joy.cpl" and pressing the "Enter" key. Then choose the Xbox 360 controller and click "Properties." Your computer will display your controller's functionality when you press buttons and move both analog sticks.

Wireless Controller

  • Download and install the software needed to run the controller (link in Resources). Choose "Controller" under section one and "Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows" under section two and select your operating system and language for sections three and four. Click "Go" and the link on the following page to start the download. Open the file and follow the instructions to install the software.

  • Insert the Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver into any of your computer's USB ports. This item must be purchased separately.

  • Press the connect button on the Xbox 360 wireless gaming receiver. Then press the connect button on your Xbox 360 wireless controller (found near the charging port at the top of the controller).

Tips & Warnings

  • If you notice problems with your Xbox 360 wireless controller, try recharging the device or replacing the batteries.
  • Setting up a controller is unique for each game. Read the game's user manual for specific details on changing the control scheme.
