How to Get a VIN for an ATV

How to Get a VIN for an ATV thumbnail
Look for the VIN on the frame.

All motor vehicles made after 1981 have a 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN). This includes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and other off road vehicles. Individual states have laws for ATVs that may include where and how to register them, where you can operate them, at what age you can operate particular sizes of them, whether or not you need to wear a helmet, and whether or not you need liability insurance. The official documentation you have for an ATV can help you get its VIN.

Instructions

    • 1

Look on the ATV itself. You will usually find your VIN on the left side on the frame rail under the engine. If not, it should be stamped or riveted to the frame in another location. Do not use the number on the engine itself.

    • 2

Look for your ATV VIN on your bill of sale. Your dealer more than likely included it to exactly identify your vehicle.

    • 3

Look on your registration card. If your state requires your ATV to be registered, it most likely identifies it by the VIN.

    • 4

Look on your insurance card. Many states require you to keep your insurance card with your ATV in case of an accident. Your VIN could also appear on your insurance policy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check your state for all laws applicable to ATVs. If you don't conform, you could get a ticket.
