Tips & Warnings

  • In Hong Kong, many people attend the Ta Chiu Festival or Festival of Peace and Renewal held on December 27. The festival is meant to summon the ancestors of those in the city, calling upon them to use their collective power to help renew the lives of their loved ones and help to fulfill their wishes for the new year. At the end of the festival all the names of those who live in the area are read aloud and then the list is attached to a paper horse and burned. The smoke symbolically carries the names up to the gods in heaven.
