Fix Broken Speakers on a PSP

Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) gaming device has fragile speakers that can malfunction for a number of different reasons. The most common errors arise from problems with the headphone jack that can disrupt the entire sound system. However, once you have identified the problem, you can usually fix it quickly and easily. Although certain malfunctions may require you to return the PSP to Sony for repairs, you can do most with simple tools if you are willing to disassemble parts of your PSP.

Things You'll Need

  • Headphones
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Wooden toothpick
  • A second PSP to test speakers (optional)
  • New PSP speakers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Download the latest PSP firmware update before attempting to repair your PSP. This may solve problems with outdated software interacting poorly with newer games (which can result in loss of sound). You can do this by simply connecting your PSP to the Internet through a wireless hub. Your PSP will search for updates automatically.

    • 2

Ensure that the earphone jack is empty. Small pieces of a broken input that remain in the jack can cause the device the think it is sending sound to earphones rather than the speakers. Gently tap your PSP on a hard surface to loosen any material or carefully clean the interior of the jack with a wooden toothpick.

    • 3

Connect and disconnect the headphone jack a few times. The jack's solder connection can become faulty, making the unit act as if headphones are always inserted. Jiggling the connection can solve the problem.

    • 4

Remove the black plastic casing of the PSP if none of these steps work. Remove all five screws, and pull the casing off gently. Make sure the wires that connect the speakers to the Wi-Fi wireless/memory stick/sound board are in fact connected securely. (You will know which board you need to look at as it holds the memory stick.) Re-insert these wires into the appropriate holes if they have come loose.

    • 5

Install new speakers if all else fails. The Sony PlayStation website offers them for sale at reasonable prices, and you can install them without any special tools. However, you might want to test your speakers on another PSP before purchasing new ones to make sure that it is actually the speakers that are the problem.

    • 6

Try replacing the Wi-Fi wireless/memory stick/sound board. Again, you can purchase this from the Sony PlayStation Web site. This requires almost completely dismantling your PSP, which will violate your warranty, so only try this step if you do not want to send your PSP to Sony for repairs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the details of your warranty before attempting repairs. Depending on your unit and the purchase date, you may qualify for free repairs.

  • Do not use anything metal or sharp to jiggle inside the headphone jack, as you may damage it or suffer a shock.
