Learn how to float so you can do the back stroke or simply rest in the water

Floating is one of the most important moves any swimmer can learn. Floating is necessary for not only the back stroke but also can help you rest if you get stuck in deep water. Humans are naturally buoyant but need to be in the correct position to take advantage of it. Learning how to float should be one of the first things new swimmers do.

Instructions

    • 1

Get into the swimming pool and stay in the shallow end. Spread your arms to your sides and let them float.

    • 2

Relax your body and allow your feet to float up in front of you. Make sure they stick out of the water a bit. Keep your arms loose to the sides.

    • 3

Straighten your back once your feet are up. Push up your chest and lean your head slightly back. Your body should be slightly submerged and your face should be out of the water.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you find yourself starting to sink, use your arms to push water down while pushing your chest up. By pushing your chest out of the water, you should be able to correct yourself and keep afloat.

  • Keeping more air in your lungs also boosts buoyancy.

  • If you are learning to swim, make sure you bring a partner when trying this out. Also, stay in the shallow end of the pool until you are comfortable in the water.
