How to Repair a Leaky Gutter Connection
Spring is the time of year when showers and thunderstorms become most frequent and common. Before the thick of the storm season hits, it is a good idea to make sure your gutter and downspout system is prepared for the weather. One of the primary problems is leakage at joints on gutters. Things You'll Need
- Ladder
- Putty knife
- Detergent
- Water
- Bucket
- Washcloth
- Rough-grain sandpaper
- Gutter sealant

Locate the leaky gutter connection and place the ladder at that location. Climb the ladder. Inside the gutter, you may or may not see where there was a sealant applied. If you do not see any sealant, move on to Step 2. If there is sealant, scrape it off with the putty knife.

Wash the surface with detergent and a washcloth. Allow it to air-dry or dry the area with a cloth.

Rough the surface of the joint with the rough-grade sandpaper. This helps the sealant hold better.

Cover the joint with a generous coating of gutter sealant. Cover the complete joint from the top of one side to the top of the other.

Spread the bead of sealant out across the joint, making sure it is not too thin. Allow it to dry. This should take about 24 hours.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure you have at least a 24-hour window without rain to ensure the sealant cures completely.
This project is best done with another person to ensure ladder safety.
