How to Remove an Oil-Based Stain From the Deck

Clean the oil off of your deck.

Oil stains are often the most difficult stains to clean because they repel water and can ingrain themselves so quickly. If you act on an oil stain promptly, however, you will have the best chances of removing it. If something oily has marred the appearance of your deck, remove it quickly and easily with supplies you likely already have on hand.

Things You'll Need

• Paper towels
• Liquid laundry detergent
• Stiff-bristled plastic brush
• Garden hose

Instructions

1. Lift excess oil quickly from the surface of the deck by blotting the stain with paper towels. Do not rub the oil as it will only further set the stain.

2. Apply a layer of liquid laundry detergent directly onto the stain and let it sit for five minutes.

3. Scrub the detergent vigorously into the stain with a stiff-bristled plastic brush.

4. Rinse the stain clean with a garden hose. Re-apply detergent and scrub again if necessary.
